As I often say, tools are useless in the hands of an untrained person. A gun in the wrong hands causes harm; a hammer in the wrong hands breaks things. It’s the same with leadership and business. A team event in the wrong hands? Well, that’s just an expensive lunch.
A chef’s knife in the wrong hands is a waste of good steel—and probably the start of a very awkward ER visit. The value of any tool, be it physical or strategic, lies in the skill and intention of the person wielding it. That's why we don’t just give people tools at work; we make sure they know how not to hit themselves with them.
Let’s talk about the infamous CRM systems. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen a top-tier CRM in place... but nobody actually leveraging it. It’s like owning a Swiss Army knife and only using it to open bottles. A CRM is meant to create efficiencies, streamline customer interaction, and provide insights. Instead, it often becomes a glorified Rolodex, if you don’t know how to use it effectively.
And then there’s project management tools. You’ve got a whole dashboard of timelines, to-do lists, and collaborative features, but what happens? It’s usually treated like a fancy checklist. If you’re not assigning tasks correctly or following up, it’s just as effective as writing reminders on post-it notes and hoping for the best.
A prime example of this is data analytics. You’d be surprised how many organizations have cutting-edge data tools... and no clue what they’re doing with them. It’s not about owning the tool—it’s about leveraging the insights and not mistaking correlation for causation (unless you want to end up blaming the weather for sales dips).
But knowing how to use them makes all the difference. Skills amplify the power of the tools, turning them into instruments of progress and innovation. In every area of business, the right training turns potential into success. Or, at the very least, it stops you from looking like you’re trying to figure out how to open a PDF.
